POMFRET — They’re back! Birds and spring fever, with the latter perhaps better described in a birder’s world as migration madness! Spring migration is underway, with May the peak month to see the many migratory birds returning to or passing through the state. The Connecticut Audubon Society (CAS) is holding birding and bird-related programs during its 5th annual Migration Madness Birdathon, set for May 13, 14 and 15.
At the Center at Pomfret on Day Road a celebration of the return of the birds will include a free night of outdoor fun, open to everyone, from 6 to 10 p.m. May 13.
Sarah Heminway, the Center’s director, said, “We want folks to bring a picnic supper, spread out on the lawn, relax, and enjoy the evening at our Family Night: Picnic and Concert. From 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. there will be two, live wildlife presentations — Horizon Wings Raptor Rehabilitation and Education with its birds of prey and Ferncroft Wildlife Rescue with its educational ambassador opossums. From 7:30 to 9 p.m. you can dance the night away to the music of Nine6teen as the sun sets. If the sky permits, there will be stargazing for the last hour of the event.”
There will be a bird walk, led by Andy Rzeznikiewicz, each day of the three-day Migration Madness Weekend. At 8 a.m. May 13 you can bird the Wyndham Land Trust (WLT) Gellert Preserve in the Abington section of town. At 8 am. May 14, birders will visit Cabbage Hill, a new WLT preserve in Woodstock. May 15 is the 13th annual 20 Warbler Day. From 6 a.m. to 2 p.m.
In all, the Center at Pomfret has 11 bird walks and a banding demonstration scheduled in May. Included is the 17th annual 90 Bird Day, with visits to locations within a 10-mile radius of the Center. The goal is to hear or see at least 90 species of birds in up to 10 hours.
