The Jacob Bowen Invitational wrestling tournament saw some pretty good competition at the Alumni Fieldhouse Feb. 3.
“I was impressed with the level of wrestling overall especially from the Massachusetts schools such as Putnam Tech,” said Centaurs coach Wes Jenkins.
Putnam Tech came away the eventual winner with 166 ½ points. The Academy placed 10th with 47 points.
Patrick Barrows and Dan Ntamwemezi both took home third-place finishes.
Barrows decisioned Juan Machicote of Putnam Tech, 10-6, to finished third at 195 pounds.
Ntamwemizi took only 2 ½ minutes to pin Mike Guzman of Bristol Central at 220 to also take home a third-place medal.
Ben Holden came close, but finished fourth in a very competitive 152-pound weight class.
Holden lost to Ben Mow in the consolation final, 6-4.
“Those guys brought their ‘A’ game to this place,” Jenkins said.
Gilbert School finished second, Haddam-Killingworth third, Ellis Tech and Montville placed fourth and fifth in the team competition.
“Most impressive was the hard work of the friends and family members of wrerstling who helped to make this tournament happen. The parents raised over $1000 for the team, selling T-shirts and doing concessions. Both the parents and students helped run the tables and also helped in set up and break down, all to support our young men,” Jenkins said.
