NEW YORK CITY — Marcos Chantada and Kel Merckel scored first-half goals, and Uriel Dalapo added one in the second half to propel the Putnam Science Academy boys’ soccer team to a 3-1 win over Pathfinder Academy Oct. 5.
“The boys played well,” said coach Ryan Dunnigan. “We actually had more chances that we were unable to finish that would have made the margin bigger, but three points is three points and we’re really excited about that.”
Chantada scored roughly midway through the first half, then Merckel followed with what Dunnigan called “an unreal score” to make it 2-0.
Merckel gathered in a pass from Tomás Melon off a free kick and fired from outside the box.
“I honestly think it was one of the best goals I’ve scored in my life,” Merckel said. “Top corner from outside the 18…I mean, it can’t get better than that, you know?”
After Pathfinder cut the lead to 2-1 before halftime, Dalapo scored early in the second half to extend the lead for the Mustangs (4-2-1). It was Dalapo’s third goal in his last three games.
