Past Issues of the Putnam Town Crier

Marianapolis
golf tourney
raises dollars
for scholarship
Special to the Putnam Town Crier
Overcast skies and a few minor sprinkles didn’t deter a full field of golfers from heading to the links Sept. 10 at the Raceway Golf Course in Thompson on behalf of the scholarship program at Marianapolis Prep School.  The addition of more than 50 additional guests at the post-tournament dinner helped in netting more than $45,000 in student scholarship aid.
“Each year this tournament raises essential dollars that provide scholarship funds for deserving students.  The sponsors and players who support this event are truly making a difference in the lives of hundreds of young people,” said Susan Andersen, Marianapolis director of Development.
The 2013 tournament winners were the foursome of Jim West, Bob Jacques, Ron Coderre and Charley Panteleakos.  They easily outpaced the field posting a stunning 17 under par 55 over the challenging par 72 Thompson layout.
“It was really an amazing round of golf as each member of our group contributed when we needed it most.  From our opening hole through our 18th we were steady throughout.  This was a great tournament and day from start to finish,” said Panteleakos.
The winners started on the 18th hole where they posted a birdie, followed by an eagle on the par four, 1st hole when Panteleakos chipped in from 20 yards off the green.  They followed that hole with two birdies and a par before recording another eagle on the par five, 5th hole.  The team finished the front nine with four consecutive birdies to enter the back nine at minus 10 and a birdie in hand from the 18th hole.
Playing off thundering drives from West and Panteleakos, the winners posted birdies on the first four holes on the back nine before recording a par on the par three 14th hole.  Following a par on the 15th, they went out in strong fashion with birdies on 16 and 17 to close out the top round of the day.
“I’ve never been a part of such a great round of golf in my entire career,” said Jacques.  “This will be something I’ll remember for a long time.”
The female champions were the awesome foursome of Lisa Bodreau, Dawn Poirier, Beth Aulenbeck and Terry Buron, who were playing in memory of Bodreau’s brother-in-law who had died recently following a courageous battle with cancer.  The winners, who coincidentally joined the tourney winners for lunch prior to the start of play, posted an even par 72.
“The memory of my brother-in-law and our matching green shirts with ‘Be Fresh’ on the front spurred us on to victory.  It was a great moment for our group,” said Bodreau.
In the mixed foursome competition the team of Theresa Tronerud, Mark Bodreau and Michael and Mark Sprino emerged victorious with a score of 61, as they toured the course in minus 11.  The long drive championship was claimed by Marianapolis Head-of-School Joe Hanrahan, who boomed a drive well over 300 yards on the 11th hole.
Among the numerous sponsors, who helped to make the tourney a financial success, Andersen noted the Tournament Sponsors – The Mousseau Family, Rampco Construction Co. of Dudley, Thompson Electrical Contractors of Quinebaug and Michael “Dugan” Wolchesky ’75 for their support and LaFramboise Water Service, who was the Dinner Sponsor.

GROTON — Read to Ride, Inc. has presented Charter Oak Federal Credit Union with a plaque to express their gratitude for the Credit Union’s continued support.
Read to Ride is a voluntary reading incentive program designed specifically for Norwich, Bozrah, Sprague, Baltic and Montville students in grades kindergarten through fifth grade. Benjamin P. Lathrop, former Norwich Mayor, and Billy Caron, Montville Councilman, established the program in 2009. Today, its board consists of 12 people.
The notion of Read to Ride stemmed from exercising the mind through reading and the body through exercise.
“Read to Ride is doing an excellent job encouraging and motivating students in kindergarten through fifth grade to read,” said Brian A. Orenstein, Charter Oak’s Chief Executive Officer. “And a new bicycle is a great incentive!"
Children who participate in Read to Ride’s voluntary reading incentive program have a chance to win a bicycle, helmet, and lock. Participating students read outside of school for a specific time period and complete a reading log, which is later exchanged for an entry into the official drawing. One boy and one girl per grade level are chosen at the conclusion of each school year during a school-wide assembly.
