Calling all future
bee keepers
POMFRET — The Pomfret Agriculture Commission will present local bee keeper experts at 7 p.m. March 20 at the Pomfret Community/Senior Center on Rt. 44.  Adam Squire and Ron Lambert are local expert bee keepers and want to share their knowledge with interested would-be bee keepers. Honey Bees are an important component for Connecticut agricultural crops and the environment and are responsible for pollinating a solid one-third of  the food supply. Their pollen- and nectar-collecting practices, essential for producing and sustaining their young, also provide us with honey and beeswax, two by-products we use and consume in a wide variety of ways.
The session will cover: Understanding the role of honey bees in agriculture and the current threats we face together; challenges facing honey bees and understanding the role of managed colonies in agriculture; honey bees, colony collapse disorder, and the food system; some solutions and action steps by any and all to support the health of these animals; open discussion and Q&A. Open to all.  An  RSVP is helpful for planning.  Reply to 860-922-4400, or email “This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.”.

The American Cancer Society has selected Richard Place of Woodstock and a Putnam business owner, to serve as honorary chair for this year’s Relay For Life of Northeastern Connecticut, to be held May 17 and 18 at the Woodstock Fairgrounds.
Known to everyone as Rick, he is owner of Putnam Ford in Putnam.  A strong supporter of Relay For Life, he has been a Corporate Sponsor of Relay For Life for 16 years.   Putnam Ford has held an annual spaghetti dinner the first Saturday in March, raising more than $300,000 in 16 years.  Place is a member of Putnam Rotary Club and a Paul Harris Fellow for his exemplary service to his community.  Although Putnam Ford and its employees are involved in many community programs, Relay For Life is by far the largest.  To quote Place “I am proud of what this community has accomplished and to have the support of this region to continue to fight the fight and we will continue to win one battle at a time until cancer is eradicated.”  He and his wife Mary and daughter Shannon live in Woodstock
“Here in Windham County, funds raised by our Relay For Life event are making an impact on so many lives, said Place. “From making possible the vital American Cancer Society programs and services that support those in our community facing a diagnosis, to life-changing cancer research and medical discovery, to advocacy for access to quality health care for everyone affected by cancer, the money raised through Relay For Life of Northeastern Connecticut is helping further the vision of a world with less cancer and more birthdays. I am proud to unite with the American Cancer Society to finish the fight.”
Committee members include: Event Chair Lori Ruehle, Survivorship Chair Betty Ribaudo, Photography Chair Marion Appleton, Advocacy Chair Peter Pavone, Publicity Chair Paul Desautels,  Volunteers Chair Tammy Jean Messier, Relay Café Chair Derek Lemery and others.  Relay For Life NECT has more than 40 people volunteering their time on the committee, planning one of the largest Relay For Life events in New England.

PUTNAM --- Mayor Anthony Falzarano has announced that the Town of Putnam has been awarded a $400,000 Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) under the housing rehabilitation category for town-wide housing rehabilitation. As part of the award, the Town of Putnam is seeking interested parties to further develop a waiting list of property owners interested in participating in the program.
Also, anyone considering taking advantage of this program may contact Jackie LeFevre, Putnam Redevelopment Agency at 860-963-6834 or call Small Cities Consultants Lisa Low & Associates at 203-888-5624.  The deadline for submitting a letter of interest is March 28.
The purpose of this grant is to provide funds for low and moderate income homeowners to make needed repairs to their homes. To be eligible, single homeowners must have an annual income that does not exceed $44,750 or a maximum of $51,150 for a household of two.  For households of 3 persons or more, please refer to the 2014 HUD Income Limits. In addition, homeowners must be tax current and have a minimum of 15 percent equity in their home.
One of the benefits of this grant is that since the money goes out as loans – at 0 percent interest which must eventually be repaid either by the homeowner or when the house changes title – the grant allows the Town to establish a revolving loan fund in perpetuity to provide assistance to some residents who need home repair but do not have the funds to make the repairs and who cannot obtain the funds through bank loans.
Some possible uses that have been identified include replacing failed furnaces, roofs, windows, and septic system repairs. These funds can provide for ADA modifications to homes as well, such as entrance ramps and bathroom modifications.
To fulfill this grant, the Town must demonstrate that there is a demand and need for this program, that residents would welcome this assistance and would take advantage of the program to rehabilitate their homes.
Please visit the Town’s website: www.putnamct.us and click on the “Redevelopment” page under “Departments” to fill out a “letter of intent”.
