Putnam
Feb. 5 the Putnam Clippers fell to ECC powerhouse Windham by a score of 54 - 25. The game was the senior night game which featured seniors Britt Bousquet, Katelyn Tarr and Kate Montgomery in their last regular season home game.
Feb. 2 the girls defeated Tourtellotte 43-30 in Thompson. The Clippers were led by Tarr with 19 points and Montgomery with 6 points and 9 rebounds. The Clippers are now 7-2 in the ECC small Division while Tourtellotte fell to 6-3 in the division. According to coach Willie Bousquet this was a key ECC Small Division victory. Putnam ended the week with a 12-5 overall record.
Marianapolis

Marianapolis 54 --- St. Mark’s 49
The Marianapolis varsity girls’ basketball team beat St. Mark’s for the second time this season and won for the second game in a row in dramatic fashion. The Knights won in overtime Feb. 3 at Ethel Walker, and they showed their resiliency again Feb. 5 winning 54-49.
Marianapolis jumped out to an early 5-0 lead behind a three-pointer from junior Alyson Stolz and a basket in the paint from senior captain Helaine Goudreau. St. Mark’s was not about let the Golden Knights (14-3) cruise to victory as they went on a 13-2 run to lead 13-7 with 11 minutes on the clock in the first half.
MPS battled back and took a 19-18 lead after sophomore Melanie Mills kicked the ball out to the perimeter and Stolz drained another three-pointer. St. Mark’s once again responded though going on an eight-point run to lead 27-19. Mills converted a three-point play and then made another basket to keep the Knights close as St. Mark’s led at the half 27-24.
The second half started slowly for both teams as they made many turnovers and could not find ways to make baskets. With 8:52 remaining in regulation, St. Mark’s led 35-32. Sophomore Sara Morrow was fouled on a shot and went to the line for MPS. After making the first, the second one rolled off the rim, but freshman Sydney Latour was there for the put back to tie the game.
Latour was there again with 7:02 on the clock to give MPS a 37-35 lead. It would not last as St. Mark’s drained a three-pointer to take a one-point lead. Latour and classmate Becky Stolz would take over for the rest of the evening as the two freshmen looked like wily veterans.
Latour gave MPS a 39-38 lead with 5:25 on the clock. After St. Mark’s took a 41-39 lead B. Stolz ran the floor in transition and came up for a pop-and-stop just inside the three-point line to tie the game. St. Mark’s scored the next five points to lead 46-41 with 1:05 on the clock.
The Knights were not worried though. B. Stolz drained her first three-pointer of the game and then Latour made a layup with eight seconds on the clock to tie the game and force overtime.
The overtime period started perfectly for the Golden Knights as B. Stolz opened the frame with a three-pointer and Latour made a shot off the glass to put MPS ahead 51-46 right away. Latour and B. Stolz combined for 18 straight Marianapolis points at the end of regulation and the beginning of overtime to show that this long season has them poised for the stretch run.
Mills also made a basket in overtime and A. Stolz went 1-2 from the line to give MPS the 54-49 victory.
Hyde-Woodstock

Hyde 48 --- PCD 30
Wolfpack girls’ varsity basketball went to PCD Feb. 1 in a league match up and came away with a win. The team has been working on their mental game as well as their physical and it paid off in a victory. The Wolfpack took the lead from the beginning and never relinquished it. The scoring was the most balanced of the season with seven of 12 players scoring. The team went into halftime with a nine-point lead. Hyde slowly pulled away in the second half behind a good defensive effort. Scoring: Sabrina Padro ‘10, 16 points; Margaret Ann Regnery ‘10, 11 points, including a three-pointer; Haruka Koda ‘10, 6 points; Becca Katz ‘11, five points including a three-pointer; Sarah DeNunzio ‘11, four points; Lexi Burke ‘10, four points; and Mari Barnett ‘11, two points.
Pomfret School
The girls varsity basketball team came out strong against the well balanced squad from Groton Feb. 3, winning 50-37. Though they weren’t necessarily finding a ton of outside shot opportunities against the opponent’s 2-3 zone, they were doing a terrific job of crashing the boards, and this was clearly the difference in the first half. Pomfret finished the half with 27 rebounds, 8 on the offensive end. Offensive rebounds led to more scoring opportunities in the paint which led to more trips to the foul line, and Pomfret capitalized well as one quarter of the team’s first half points came from the foul line. Tristyn Drake went 2-2, Maura Hall went 3-3, and Jamie Samociuk and Zenab Keita each only missed one. On the other end, Groton did too good a job of penetrating, dishing, and finding the man for the open outside shot, and seven players were on the board for Groton at the end of the half. While shooting percentages were probably similar, Pomfret continued to limit any second chance scoring opportunities, keeping Groton entirely out of the paint, which allowed for the 32-19 lead at half.
A lot of credit to Groton for coming out in a tough man to man defense in the second half, throwing Pomfret on their heels and taking advantage of their slow start. And just as Pomfret adjusted to the man, Groton switched to a 3-2 zone defense. Pomfret’s adjustment was again slow, too slow for this point in the season, and shots of any quality were few and far between. Fortunately Zenab continued to battle inside, and Z Hutchins and Maura Hall were each able to connect from the outside, providing the team some much needed breathing room. The second half was ultimately an 18-18 tie, and the difference once again was rebounding, though not in our favor. Groton turned it up a notch in the second, and Pomfret didn’t. Only three players (Kim, Maura, and Zenab) came away with offensive rebounds in the second half, and the team tallied an unimpressive 17 second half rebounds total.
