Boys qualify;

WOODSTOCK --- No surprise, the division's top team from last year is headed to the state tournaments.
The Woodstock Academy Centaurs baseball team played last week against Norwich Free Academy and qualified for the state dance with a 13-9 victory.
The win was the eight on the year and the third in a row. John Naughton again was a big part of the win, pitching 3 and 1/3 innings of solid relief for the win. Paul Lindstrom had a big day at the plate with a double and home run with 4 RBI. Ross Lincoln scored four runs and added an RBI double. Wyatt Gibeault, Kevin Bonitz and Cody DeGray combined for seven hits including four doubles,  five runs scored and four RBI. The Centaurs are now 8-8 overall and 2-5 in ECC Large Division, according to head coach Dave Austin.
In last week's game against Tourtellotte the Centaurs won 11-1 again on the arm of Naughton. He pitched a two- hitter in a complete game effort. Ross Lincoln had two hits, three RBI's, including a home run and double. Chris Mayhew had three hits including two doubles and three RBI. Zak Kozey had two hits and three RBI including a double.
Austin said, against Bacon Paul Lindstrom went 4 for 4 with two RBI  and pitched a complete game four-hitter with 9 k’s and two walks. Ross Lincoln continued his hot hitting with another two hits and an RBI and scored two runs. Cody DeGray had two hits including a double.
Softball
The Woodstock Academy softball team continued to struggle last week losing to Tourtellotte, Bacon Academy, and Norwich Free Academy.  May 10  the Lady Centaurs lost to Tourtellotte 5-2.  Woodstock was unable to generate much offense against the tough Tiger pitcher, said head coach David Walley.
May 12 Woodstock lost to Bacon Academy despite scoring seven runs in the game.  Bacon was able to score 12 runs on 12 hits and was also aided by four Woodstock errors.  Justina Thoma, Samantha Boyle, and Julia Oleksy each had three hits for the game.  Boyle doubled and hit her third home run of the season.  Taylor Malstrom took the loss in the circle and Woodstock's record fell to 4-10.
May 14 Woodstock  faced a tough NFA team and fell 7-2.  Senior Tess Rubega struck out six Woodstock batters and allowed only two hits for the game.  She was opposed by sophomore Taylor Malstrom and freshman Adelis Concepcion, who pitched for the Centaurs.  Justina Thoma doubled for Woodstock.
The Centaurs ended the week 4-11 overall and needs to win four out of their last five to qualify for the State Tournament.  This week they play Killingly, East Lyme and Waterford, before finishing up with Ledyard and Somers.
“We have had a very difficult stretch of games.  The State Tournament is still a possibility but we need to get right in a hurry.  The girls are still working hard at practices and I do not think they want to see the season come to a premature end, but we are just not winning,” commented coach Walley.
