Local grads
POMFRET — Pomfret School graduated 90 students, representing 13 countries, 24 states and the District of Columbia at its 116th Commencement Exercises May 30, 2010. Nineteen of those graduates are local students.
Laura Alves of N. Grosvenordale, was inducted into the Cum Laude Society as a junior, and was also a sports captain during her senior year. At the awards dinner the evening before graduation, Alves received the Fine Arts Department Dance Award, The Foreign Language Award for being the top student in Spanish, the Religion Department Award for her excellence in the study of Religion, and The Faculty Award, which is given to students who, in the opinion of the faculty, deserve special recognition.
Andrew Bertelsen of Pomfret, at the annual Awards Dinner the evening preceding graduation, Bertelsen received The Paul M. Rosenfield ’67 Award, which is presented to that member of the Sixth Form who best exemplifies strength of character through courage and humor. In addition to the award, Bertelsen was elected by his classmates to be the class speaker at commencement.
Mackenzie Deary of Pomfret, was inducted into the Cum Laude Society as a junior, Deary capped of her stellar four-year career at Pomfret by receiving the English Department Award, which is presented to the top student in English, The Fine Arts Department Music Award, and the Language Department Award in French at the annual Awards Dinner the night preceding graduation. The following day at Commencement, Deary was announced as the #1 scholar of the Class of 2010 and was also the recipient of The Founders Medal, which is presented to the Pomfret School Senior who gave of him/herself to the School. This award is the highest honor given by Pomfret.
Ashley Mayo of Dayville, a four-year senior, is a member of the Cum Laude Society. At the annual Awards Dinner the evening preceding graduation, Mayo received two awards. The History Department Award, which is awarded to the top student in history, and The Richard H. Randall, Jr. ’44 Award, which is given to a member of the Sixth Form with outstanding ability to communicate ideas in the pursuit of excellence.
The following received their diplomas: Gabriella Bucci of Woodstock, Amy Diaz of Pomfret, Nicholas McKenzie of Thompson, Emily Mooney of Pomfret, Kathryn Sheehan of Pomfret, Kirsten Therrien of Putnam, Brandon Thuotte of Danielson, Garrett White of Pomfret and Brittany Zulkiewicz of Danielson.
