PUTNAM --- For the graduates at Putnam High School's 133rd commencement, it was a night of family, inspiration and confidence.
School Superintendent William Hull told the graduates they were leaving family and safety for a world with many formidable challenges. "But your generation has a secret weapon and that weapon is you," he said. He said he's seen the graduates "determination, resolve and their brilliance," adding "you truly are destined for greatness." He called on them to continue to learn and said if they did that "I see the light of a bright future in your eyes."
Bright lights figured also in principal Paul Brenton's words to the graduates --- he said lighthouses were stuck in his head as he thought about what he would say during the June 19 graduation ceremony. He called on them to be strong and stand on their own two feet. "Never allow your inner light to be dimmed," he told them. He urged them to always do the right thing, to make integrity the watchword of their lives. "Dream big and live honestly," he added.
Brittany Bousquet, valedictorian, told her classmates --- everyone from award winners to mischief makers --- to remember the fast friendships they've formed. The classmates are all one family - ready to help one another. Gabrielle Robinson was the salutatorian.
The winner of the Student of the Year was Bousquet. The Educator of the Year award went to John Peters and Marisa Stankiewicz and the Citizen of the Year Award went to Martha Sabourin.
