Food Share is on this week

PUTNAM — The Danielson Veterans Coffeehouse Food Share’s schedule was knocked a bit askew in January, but those in need will find it Thursday, Jan. 15 at the Farmers Market Pavilion off Kennedy Drive.
Bruce Hay, organizer, said the traditional date, the first Thursday of the month, was a holiday, New Year’s Day, this year. Connecticut Food Share, one of the two major supplies, could not deliver on Jan. 8.
So it’s on for Jan. 15. Hay said the line will open at 9:30 a.m. It’s a drive-through and all are welcome.
Both Midwest Food Bank New England and Connecticut Food Share will arrive at the pavilion early Jan. 15. Until they unload, Hay will not know what foods he will have to work with. He assesses the contents and then gets the crackerjack stable of volunteers started packing boxes and bags for distribution.
Wednesday he will be picking up the allotment for February. Because the Food Share is the next day, the volunteers may be able to hand out some of that. The rest is put into a “bunch of freezers,” etc. for the Feb. 5 Food Share.
“And then it will be the first Thursday of the month for the rest of the year,” he said.
According to Hay, foods donated for this month’s Food Share include: cereal, drinks (they may be able to give each person a case of soda, he said), chips, snack bars, baby food, coffee, cookies and popcorn. Much is donated by Windham Soda which has been a supporter for years.
