PUTNAM — First Fridays Aug. 2 was a wonderful success with an estimated 3,500 in attendance, according to Sheila Frost, business coordinator of the Putnam Business Association.
Special features included tie-dye T-shirts courtesy of Putnam Bank, posters of 1969 Woodstock Music Festival images in Hippie Lane, fortune telling from Cosmic Cat and countless attendees in Woodstock-era garb.
Music was fabulous from the Billy Pilgrim Band who dressed accordingly in their Hippie attire and brought their VW Bus and Bug for display. The Just Two Trio was in Union Square and their ‘60s music was enjoyed by a crowd of people, many of which brought their own chairs. Frost said there was a 1969 Shasta Camper on display which was for fun photo ops. More than 50 vendors showcased food, art, pet supplies, children’s activities, hair braiding and hair wrapping – even free haircuts!
Quest Martial Arts and The Complex Performing Arts Centre both had student performances. Berkshire Hathaway of Woodstock was the Volunteer Spotlight Group and they were very helpful in the Hippie Lane Art Installation, Frost added.
Many duck race tickets were sold and the PBA booth was well attended with PBA Membership Committee members volunteering their time. There was a church group from House of Prayer Ministry that had bubbles, chalk games, corn hole and other activities for children in front of The Crossings.
Frost said attendees said their favorite part of the event was “the community camaraderie. That they love to get together and see people that they know, enjoy the music, the food and the sights. There is something for all age groups.”
Frost added that the September First Fridays is ComiCon and it’s shaping up to be a lot of fun. Visitors are encouraged to come dressed as their favorite comic book character.
