Graduates
NEW LONDON, N.H. — Two local students received bachelor’s degrees at the Colby-Sawyer Commencement on May 11, 2019:
Ian Burgess of Pomfret Center earned a bachelor’s in sport management. Burgess served as a senator for the Student Government Association.
Molly Schroder of Woodstock earned a bachelor’s in nursing. Schroder graduated cum laude as a member of the Wesson Honors Program and Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society in nursing.
She will begin her nursing career this summer in the Inpatient Hematology/Oncology Unit at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center.

Local student takes
prize at national
championship
LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A Thompson student was awarded a Skill Point Certificate in Cosmetology at a national championship, 2019 SkillsUSA Championships, held in Louisville.
She is a student at H.H. Ellis Technical High School in Danielson.
More than 6,500 students competed at the national showcase of career and technical education. The SkillsUSA Championships is the largest skill competition in the world and covers 1.4 million square feet, equivalent to 20 football fields or 25 acres.
Students were invited to the event to demonstrate their technical skills, workplace skills and personal skills in 103 hands-on competitions including robotics, automotive technology, drafting, criminal justice, aviation maintenance and public speaking. Industry leaders from 600 businesses, corporations, trade associations and unions planned and evaluated the contestants against their standards for entry-level workers. Industry support of the SkillsUSA Championships is valued at over $36 million in donated time, equipment, cash and material. More than 1,100 industry judges and technical committee members participated this year.

The Town of Pomfret approved the following ordinance at its Annual Town Meeting held May 17, 2018: “An Ordinance Regarding Additional Tax Exemptions of Farm Machinery”. Said ordinance shall become effective with assessment years beginning October 1, 2018:
AN ORDINANCE REGARDING ADDITIONAL TAX EXEMPTIONS OF FARM MACHINERY
Pursuant to the authority of General Statutes 12-91(b), the Town of Pomfret hereby provides an additional exemption from property tax for all farm machinery qualified for exemption under section (a) of said statute to the extent of an additional assessed value of one hundred thousand dollars, subject to the same limitations as the exemption provided under subsection (a) and further subject to the application and qualification process provided in subsection (c) of said statute, this ordinance to be effective with assessment years beginning October 1, 2018.
