BOSTON — Four local students were named to the MCPHS University dean’s list for the fall 2018 semester: Nicholas Bennett, Danielson, pursuing a bachelor’s in predental-dental hygiene. Nicholas will graduate in 2018 from the Boston, Massachusetts campus; Cheyenne Perron, Danielson, pursuing bachelor’s in dental hygiene. Cheyenne will graduate in 2019 from the Worcester campus; Priya Patel, Hampton, pursing a bachelors in nursing, Priya will graduate in 2019 from the Worcester; Toni Ramos, Pomfret Center, pursuing a bachelor’s in nursing, will graduate in 2020 from the Boston.
Visits desert
WILLIMANTIC — Margalit Kaufman of Woodstock Valley, ’19, was one of 15 Eastern Connecticut State University students who recently returned from the American Southwest after studying desert ecology in a global field course (GFC) with the biology department. Kaurman is majoring in biology.
The course was an introduction to the study of desert ecology and biogeography. In the Mojave and Sonoran desert systems, students examined how environmental factors and biotic interactions shape the diversity and distribution of arid-adapted plant and animal communities from local to ecoregional scales. They evaluated how these communities are assembled over ecological and geological timescales.

PAUL SMITHS, N.Y. — Brendan McMerriman of Pomfret Center has been named to the Dean’s List at Paul Smith’s College for the fall 2018 semester. McMerriman is majoring in Parks and Conservation Management.

DANIELSON — The Arc Eastern Connecticut has been awarded a $2,000 grant from SI Financial Group Foundation (formerly Savings Institute Bank & Trust), a division of Berkshire Bank to cover the cost of technology upgrades in the agency’s Danielson offices. “SI Financial Group and its foundation have been extremely important community partners for many years,” said Kathleen Stauffer, CEO of The Arc Eastern Connecticut. “We are extremely fortunate to receive their continued support over the years and appreciate their dedication to our mission of partnering with people with intellectual and developmental disabilities for full equality.”

WOODSTOCK — The Woodstock Fair, always Labor Day weekend, continues to offer something for everyone when it comes to its Main Stage entertainment lineup in 2019.
The 159th annual edition of the Fair will, for the second consecutive year, offer two headline artists on both Aug. 31 and Sept. 1 with fabulous shows on the bookend days, Aug.30 and Sept. 2.
The Sweet, a band born in England, will rock the house at the Woodstock Fair on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. The band is known for such classics as “The Ballroom Blitz,” “Little Willy” and a song that experienced a rebirth in the movie, “Guardians of the Galaxy”, “Fox on the Run.” Following The Sweet will be the heavy metal band, Skid Row, at 8 p.m. Skid Row soared to the top of the charts in the 90’s with hit songs such as “18 and Life” and “I Remember You.” By 1996, the band had sold over 20 million albums worldwide.
Opening for both The Sweet and Skid Row will be Granite, a band composed of alumni from The Woodstock Academy and others.
Also on the stage will be hypnotist Jim Spinnato, who will have two shows.
Country music lovers will have the best of two eras on Sunday.
Country music Hall of Famer Ronnie Milsap will entertain at 2:30 p.m. on the Main Stage of the Woodstock Fair. On Sunday night, Maddie & Tae, who are touring with Carrie Underwood, will grace the Woodstock Fair stage at 8 p.m.
Tim Charron returns to the Woodstock Fair and will open for both Ronnie Milsap and Maddie & Tae. Jim Spinnato will also do two shows on Sunday.
The Fair opens on Friday with a well-recognized tribute band on the Main Stage.
Tusk will perform its own brand of the magical Fleetwood Mac sound and music at 8 p.m. Jim Spinnato will also do an early evening show to open for Tusk.
There will also be a special event on the Main Stage beginning at 1 p.m. Aug. 30.
The Connecticut Battle of the Bands, featuring music from the Woodstock Music Festival in New York, will take place on the Main Stage. The event will feature five Connecticut-based bands vying for $17,000 in prize money and the coveted title of “2019 Connecticut Band of the Year.”
