Wyndham Land Trust Winter
Solstice celebrated on the land
Keeping with an annual tradition, members and friends of the Wyndham Land Trust gathered to celebrate the Winter Solstice on the family-friendly Lyon Preserve in Pomfret.
Over a warm crackling fire, hot chocolate and snacks, conversation included celebration on what an amazing year this has been for the Wyndham Land Trust. The Land Trust placed an additional 700+ acres of land under its protection – a 25 percent increase in a single year.
The vast majority of the property acquired in 2017 was of high conservation value and consisted of large tracts with the potential for expansion.
The increased pace of land acquisition was the result of hard work by the entire Land Trust community, a little luck, and a strategic decision by the Board of Directors to focus on and aggressively pursue the most critical lands in northeast Connecticut.
To ensure a warm rosy glow, and warm toes, many attendees strolled the preserve. With a crust of snow covering much of the loop trails on the preserve, attendees spotted turkey, bunny and other animal tracks, enjoyed finding shapes in the clouds floating by, and as sunset approached they listened to the twitter of birds scurrying to settle in for the night.
All residents of Windham County are direct beneficiaries of the Land Trust’s efforts. As Wyndham Land Trust likes to say, “These are (y)our preserves!”
