Fishing Derby: Catching some fish … and fun

PUTNAM — For more than 50 years, the Putnam Rotary Club’s Noe Poulin Youth Fishing Derby was brought smiles. And the May 16 edition at Rotary Park was no exception.
Kids between 5 and 15 swarmed around the Quinebaug River in Rotary Park and on the Bridge Street Bridge. Considering the day’s warmth, the fish weren’t as active as usual, but that didn’t stop the fun at all.
“It is great to offer a free event to the families of our service area,” said the club’s fishing derby organizer, Doug Porter.
About 75 kids turned up for the fun. The online registration, new this year, was a hit, he said.
Prizes were awarded in a drawing and for the winners in each category.
Basket winners in the drawing (thanks to donations from WIN Waste Innovations and Runnings) included:
Colton Fortin, Ethan Marshall, Ivan Burk and Andy Andrews.
Walmart gift cards went to category winners including:
Biggest Fish, 6-9, a tie (13: rainbow trout): Alex and Jordan Aheart.
Biggest Fish, 10-12: Danilis Cintron.
Most fish, 13-15: Kyan Sousa
Biggest Fish, 13-15: Thomas Converse (10.5 inches .6-lb).
