The Woodstock Academy adds Elite Basketball program
WOODSTOCK — Woodstock Academy announced today that the “highly successful basketball program, led by coaches Tom Espinosa and Josh Scraba,” Elite Basketball program, will be relocating to The Woodstock Academy beginning in the upcoming 2026-27 academic year.
Espinosa and Scraba were formerly the coaches at the Putnam Science Academy. PSA closed recently after financial troubles including unpaid taxes, the IRS, unpaid teachers and more.
“The Woodstock Academy is very excited to add this program to our vast number of offerings for our students and community. We look forward to this unique partnership for The Academy’s future,” said Dr. Lawrence Filippelli, Head of School.
The program, which has earned national recognition for developing elite student-athletes and competing at the highest levels of high school basketball, will be entering an exciting new chapter at The Woodstock Academy.
“We are extremely excited to be bringing our basketball program to The Woodstock Academy. This partnership has the potential to reach the highest level of high school basketball. I can’t thank Dr. Lawrence Filippelli and Jon Sturdevant enough for believing in our vision and giving us this incredible opportunity. We are thrilled to join the WA community and look forward to bringing high-level basketball, excitement, and pride to campus,” said Espinosa.
This transition creates an opportunity to further enhance the student-athlete experience by combining the program’s proven athletic success with The Woodstock Academy’s strong academic offerings, residential life program, and campus facilities. Together, these resources will provide student-athletes with an exceptional environment to grow academically, athletically, and personally.
“We are excited to welcome coach Espinosa, coach Scraba, and the basketball program to The Woodstock Academy,” said Associate Head of School for External Affairs Jon Sturdevant. “This partnership represents a unique opportunity to build upon an already outstanding program while providing student-athletes with access to a world-class educational experience and the resources they need to succeed both on and off the court.”
Additional details will be announced in the coming weeks.
