Pomfret School Griffins’ expands its winning ways
POMFRET --- Nov. 8, Pomfret School hosted Millbrook School for their annual rivalry: The Battle for Route 44. The Pomfret Griffins emerged victorious once again, extending their winning streak against the Millbrook Mustangs to five consecutive years. The event featured multiple athletic contests across campus and at the NEPSTA Cross Country Championships at Highland Park in Attleboro, Mass. Pomfret demonstrated skill, determination, and team spirit in every matchup.
The day began with strong efforts on the sub?varsity fields, where Pomfret dominated early. The girls’ JV soccer team built a 4–0 halftime lead, the JV field hockey squad jumped ahead 3–0, boys’ thirds soccer led 2–1, and boys’ JV soccer was up 3–1 at the break. By the end of play, the Griffins had completed a clean sweep of the sub?varsity slate.
Pomfret’s momentum carried indoors to Lewis Gymnasium, where the JV volleyball team secured a 2–1 victory in sets. At the same time, the girls’ cross country team placed ahead of Millbrook at the NEPSTA championships, contributing another win to the Griffins’ strong showing, while the boys cross country team fell short by a single point.
As the day moved into varsity play back on the Hilltop, the Griffins continued to deliver commanding performances. The girls’ varsity soccer team shut out Millbrook 8–0, extending their own winning streak in the rivalry to five straight years. The boys’ varsity soccer team fought hard but ultimately fell to the Mustangs after a tied first half. The varsity volleyball squad swept their rivals in three sets. The varsity field hockey team sealed the day with a dominant 7–1 victory, securing the #6 seed in the NEPSAC Class?C Tournament and closing out the day in emphatic fashion.
Final Scores: Sub?varsity - Girls JV Soccer: W 6–2; JV Field Hockey: W 5–0; Boys’ Thirds Soccer: W 4–1; Boys’ JV Soccer: W 3–1; JV Volleyball: W 2–1.
Varsity: Girls’ Varsity Soccer: W 8–0; Boys’ Varsity Soccer: L 8–1; Varsity Volleyball: W 3–0; Varsity Field Hockey: W 7–1.
Cross Country (NEPSTA Championships): Girls’ Varsity: Pomfret 12th of 22 (ahead of Millbrook); Boys Varsity: Pomfret 11th of 23 (just behind Millbrook)
Head of School Heather Willis Daly accepted the Peck?Pulling Trophy — named for the founders of the rival schools — on behalf of the Griffins. “I’m thrilled to be here for my first Pomfret vs. Millbrook Day,” she said. “We have been excited to host Millbrook for the competition today, and I am so proud of the Griffins for this remarkable victory!”
