PUTNAM --- The Putnam girls’ softball team started off playing one of their best games of the year. But in the end, one bad inning did them in.
“This was a tough one” said coach Steve Smith. The Lady Clippers were trailing Wheeler 11-7 heading into the sixth inning. Then the flood gates opened! A few errors and some timely hitting by Wheeler capped off a 12-run sixth inning which sealed the deal. The Clippers lost 23-7.
“I have said to the girls all year long, ‘If we can get some hits and get on base, we can be a dangerous team.’ Our  outfield, which is comprised of junior Dawn Cericeillo, freshmen Erica Anderson and Nicky Gosselin, played very well today. Each girl has never played competitive softball before but made some timely catches, Smith said.
“They are starting to get it,” he added. “I have been working real hard with them on catching and throwing and it is starting to pay off. We need to keep our heads in the game for all seven innings. You just can’t take one inning off against some of these teams in the ECC.”
